Cal fires swim coach Teri McKeever after investigating bullying allegations

BERKELEY, Calif. — Longtime University of California women’s swimming coach Teri McKeever was fired Tuesday following an investigation into allegations of harassment, bullying and verbal abuse, the state said. school in a statement.

McKeever led the Golden Bears to four NCAA tag team titles in 29 years. She coached the United States women’s swimming team at the 2012 London Olympics, the first woman to hold the position.

Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton said in a letter to the team and athletic staff that an investigation report by an independent law firm detailed “numerous violations of university policies that prohibit discrimination. racial, national origin and disability. … The report also verbally details abusive behavior contrary to our most important values.”

Knowlton said the 482-page report substantiated numerous allegations of unacceptable behavior and said it was in the “best interests of our student-athletes, our swimming program and Cal Athletics as a whole” that the program separates from McKeever.

The investigation followed a Southern California News Group investigation in May which said McKeever “allegedly verbally and emotionally abused, insulted and threatened swimmers almost daily, pressuring athletes to compete or training while injured or suffering from chronic illnesses or eating disorders.’
