China’s military carried out one of its biggest incursions around Taiwan in recent weeks on Wednesday, defense officials said.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said 34 Chinese military planes and nine navy ships were detected near the island nation around 3 a.m.
“The armed forces have been monitoring the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, navy ships and land missile systems to respond to these activities,” the ministry tweeted.

Twenty of the detected aircraft had crossed “the center line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the southwest Taiwan ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone).
The incursions of the Chinese army are almost daily. Beijing has continued to fly military planes near Taiwan in a bid to bolster its position that the island is part of China.

At the end of December, China sent a record number of 71 aircraft and seven ships to Taiwan – the largest military exercise of this scale in 2022.
