How They Created Bill & Frank’s Love Story For HBO’s The Last Of Us

Frank’s Love Story

The latest episode of HBO’s The Last of Us showed us the biggest departure from the game’s material. At the same time, it gave the series its strongest episode and fleshed out Bill, played by Nick Offer man , more than ever before.

In the first Last of Us game, Bill is introduced as an apocalyptic prepper and survivalist, owing Joel a list of favors for unspecified reasons. We knew at one point that Bill had a partner, Frank, who mysteriously left in the middle of the night, never to return. We never saw Frank but felt the impact he left on Bill. In episode 3, titled “Long, Long Time” after Linda Rondstadt’s song, Bill and Frank never separated but in fact lived to a ripe old age where they both committed assisted suicide. .

“Bill and Frank are kind of opposites when it comes to how they operate in the world,” the actor said. “Bill is super practical and unemotional and Frank is the opposite of that…we can do those contrasting scenes. Those action scenes and then those intimate, vulnerable scenes.”

Although the episode is a major change from the material, the end result is always the same: Joel and Ellie get their outfits from the game, Joel gets the truck and weapon upgrades, and Joel gets guilty of losing Tess and a reminder of her failures to keep her loved ones safe.

The Last of Us airs Sundays on HBO.
